Starbucks, I Love Lucy, and the Yucatán Peninsula

Hee hee!

I was searching for my old email address on Google just now. One of the results was a web page containing a yooge list of emails. I thought to myself, "Gosh, this looks suspiciously like a database of email addresses for spammers to use." The page is even downloadable via a .csv file, or data table. Of course, I'm smart enough to never put strange files I don't know on my computer.

So I go to the main website, http://noontide.ca/. Apparently, they are "a Toronto web design company that has extensive experience in dynamic site design and compatibility". Fair enough. Nothing about "providing our opt-in customers with the best daily deals from exclusive vendors" or somesuch.

Then I type in http://user.noontide.ca to get a little more specific. A fairly large directory. I click on Apps, the next folder in the web page name. There are three folders, CSV to SQL loader, Email Emailer, and GooglePage. Email Emailer sounds suspicious, so I click on it. Voila! A bulk email program called PointerPro.

I'm definitely getting weirded out now. I go back and click on CSV to SQL loader, and then Compilation.csv. I use GoogleCache to view the page. TA-DA!!!!!!!!!! Another! David! Victory! More email addresses. Next, I click on Loader.php. Looks like the output of a program putting these emails into an SQL database.

I have no idea what Principals-Maybe.csv is supposed to be.

Finally, Toronto - M4N - MRT - Amalgamation.csv is the list where I found my email. No, you cannot know what it is.

I poked around the rest of the site for a while, then left.

I am definitely writing Noontide an email about this. It's all just too weird.
